About Centre 56

Centre 56 was established in 1973 by two doctors and their wives and has grown as a women’s refuge, from early beginnings with shared rooms and mattresses on floors, to individual family rooms and a range of children’s activities.

In the Beginning

Appalled at the injuries women were sustaining at the hands of their partners and, more so the effect it was having on children, Dr Basil, Enid Levy, Dr. Cyril and Pat Taylor decided to take a stand. With help from friends, Save the Children and Social Services Grant Aid they established a refuge for women caught in violent or abusive relationships.

Nobody was ever turned away which meant that it soon outgrew its modest beginnings and the trust rented the building next door. This too was soon too small but the trustees managed to persuade the Princess Park Housing Co-operative to fund the first purpose built Women’s refuge in the country which opened in 1984.

Centre 56 Ltd

Now owned by Liverpool Housing Trust, Centre 56 Ltd boast 19 purpose built bedrooms and provide a safe environment for women in abusive relationships. Help is also given to make the important and necessary life choices for themselves and their children.

In addition there is Ofsted registered nursery facilities as well as after school activities for older children which means that very little, if any, time needs to be risked outside the safe facilities of the refuge which in turn encourages mothers to spend time with unsettled children confused by the changes.

Building Bridges

Centre 56 has worked hard to build bridges with other organisations and has extended its services to offer ‘on site’ advice to other organisations. Organisations such as the NSPCC, Roy Castle Foundation, Health Visitors and School Practitioners all benefit from the wealth of experience Centre 56 have to offer.
